Here is the complete tutorial of “Bethlehem Jazz,” created in the summer of 2015. This was my first successful portrait, and as an added bonus, it won “Honorable Mention” 9th Annual Morning Call Juried Exhibition at the Baum School of Art.
The techniques I’m using are based on the style of Ona Kingdon. After researching many different portrait artists, her method provides the outcome I’m looking for, and I admire her work. Check her out at http://www.onak.ca/

The sky is Ultramarine Blue. I masked around the subject.
The skin tones are a mix of Yellow Ochre, Permanent Rose, and a bit of Cobalt. I started with the darker areas, which are the same mix but with more Cobalt. He’s looking a little scary right now.
The lighter skin tones use the same mix, but lean more towards the Yellow Ochre and Permanent Rose. Now he looks healthier.
The bell of the trombone is like a jigsaw puzzle of colors. The brass of the instrument is comprised of different mixes of Yellow Ochre, New Gamboge, and Burnt Sienna. I always text mixes before starting the painting.
